Trashmasters International announced last week that it has awarded $65,000 in college scholarships for four lucky recently graduated high school students.
The BFI Trashmasters has emerged as one of the largest sources of college scholarships in the Roaring Fork Valley, and this year's recipients stretch from Aspen to Glenwood. The 2001 recipients are Cameron Wenzel of Snowmass Village (Aspen High School), who will be attending The University of Arizona at Tucson; Trevor Johnson of Basalt (Basalt High School), attending Colorado State University; Amanda Rubin of Carbondale (Roaring Fork High School), attending The University of Northern Colorado and Nichole lvie of

"We now have 16 students in our program," said David Slaybaugh, scholarship chair-man. "Indeed, we have come a long way in the past eight years. The most difficult task is select-ing the recipients; this year we had over 50 applications among the four schools. We only wish that we could help each one of them."
The BFI Trashmasters is a charity golf tournament that benefits the Roaring Fork Valley Scholarship Fund, which awards college scholarships to graduating seniors at Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale arid Glenwood Springs high schools.
The tournament, which many dub as "bizarre" golf, rewards

player strange happenings like hitting a tree (Barkie): bouncing a ball down the cart path (Willie on the road again): hitting into the water (Drinkie); and 17 other clever trashes. Players come from all over the world in pursuit of the coveted blue jacket, which happens to be BFI blue this year.
The Trashmasters has been recognized as the world's most unique golf tournament and has been covered by Sports Illustrated, NBC, CBS and CNN television, as well as sev-eral travel and sports maga-zines. This year, it will be played at the Snowmass Club Aug. 10, drawing hundreds of people from all over the world. Past participants include Oscar, winning actor Michael Douglas. Vice President Dan Quayle and M*A*S*H star Wayne Rogers.
