| GET TRASHED
Most of us would be tempted to break our clubs one by one if we scored an eighteen on a par five. Not the Trashmasters. The brainchild of Boone Schweitzer, Trashmasters' International is an annual invitational tournament at Snowmass Club Golf Links (near Aspen). Instead of the usual scoring, the Trashmasters' rule book lists eighteen cleverly named Situations in which golfers are re-worded points for making incredible saves after lousy shots. The "Billie," for instance, a rule named for Bill Clinton, awards one point to anyone who can "make par after a less than perfect lie." Says Schweitzer, "Everyone who plays has fun, and it's a great cause." Proceeds go toward college scholarships.
Not everyone loves Trashmasters. It took two years and fifteen thousand dollars in litigation to convince the folks at Augusta that Trashmasters meant no disrespect to their legendary tournament (though they do award the winner a blue jacket). That little contretemps aside, the tournament has been a hit. Resolutely democratic, they accept the first 144 registrants ($150 entry fee)1 which was bad news last year for Jack Nicholson, who answered his invite late. The August event is scheduled for Friday the thirteenth which means the Trashmaster gods should be with you. Call 970-923-2700.
